The town of "Etowah", in Cherokee County was renamed "Canton" in 1834 when two  local business men ventured into silk production and wanted their town to be renamed after Canton, China. The venture failed, the name remained. However the town did become famous for its "Canton Denim" produced by Canton Cotton Mills.
